Healthy Breath in the Midst of the Canadian Wildfires

Before any real benefit can be derived from physical exercises, one must first learn how to breath properly. Our very life depends on it.
— Joesph Pilates

In Pilates, breath is fundamental the practice. It aids in circulation, oxygenates our blood, keeps our hearts pumping, and clears our minds. It’s a powerful tool that we often take for granted.

In the midst of these Canadian wildfires and unprecedented smoke, I wanted to take a moment to bring attention to our breath. My family and I moved from California over two years ago and dealt with wildfire season every year.

I encourage you to take precautions when outside and limit your exposure as much as possible. I have N95 masks available at the studio for those who need them.

Below are some helpful tips for keeping safe and why it’s important.

  • Wear an N95 mask whenever you are outside or in your car, even if for short periods of time

  • Turn on air purifiers when available

  • Limit your time outside

  • Check air quality maps daily, such as the iPhone weather app or this AccuWeather website

  • Stay tuned to the news for important updates

WHY DOES THIS MATTER:

  • Smoke is particle pollution, very tiny solid and liquid particulate matter that can be difficult for your body to get rid of

  • Smoke can reduce your lung function, which can leave you feeling tired, dizzy, brain foggy, and overall not yourself

  • Smoke can trigger asthma attacks, coughing, headaches, sore throats and much more
